Guided Hikes & Brewery Tour, Sip & Paint Event, Photography Class Offered

Guests to Canaan Valley Resort September 24-26 can enjoy the amazing natural beauty and crisp cooler temperatures of fall in the highest mountain valley in the eastern United States while experiencing new activities designed to showcase the region’s scenery.

“We recognize guests are interested in getting outdoors while learning new things and the activities we’ve got planned for the weekend of September 24-26 provide the perfect opportunity,” said Sam England, general manager of Canaan Valley Resort.

England said the resort will offer three events on Saturday, September 25th: the guided “Moon Rocks” hike and brewery tour, a photography workshop and hike, and an evening “Sip & Paint” class.

The Moon Rocks Hike will take place on the Moon Rocks Trail, located at the Yellow Creek Natural Area, an 860-acre public preserve owned and managed by the West Virginia Land Trust in Davis, West Virginia. The four-mile trail features massive formations of “moon rock” sandstone bedrock some 480 million years old as well as wetland areas that give way to areas of hardwoods. The hike offers spectacular mountain and water scenery. The hike begins at 9am.

Following the hike, participants will enjoy stops at unique local breweries in the mountain towns of Davis and Thomas. The tour will end at approximately 4:30pm. There is a $15 fee to participate in the hike and beverage purchases during the brewery tour are the responsibility of the participant. All guests must be 21 years of age or older.

For those interested in learning the basics of digital photography and using those newly learned skills to photograph the beauty of the area, the resort will host a Fall Photography Workshop and hike from 4-7pm on Saturday, September 24th. An experienced instructor will provide tips and tricks for capturing a variety of Autumn scenery and then lead guests on a hike of the Blackwater River Trail. Guests must bring their own mirrorless or DSLR camera and there is a $25 fee to participate.

Saturday evening features a “Sip & Paint” event led by local artist and instructor Lynn Smith. The event, to take place from 7-9pm in the resort lodge, offers guests step-by-step instruction on how to paint a fall scene on a 11’’x14’’ canvas while enjoying a glass of wine or two. All art supplies, protective apron, and wine are included in the registration fee, which is $45 per person.
