The leaves are turning and creating a colorful mosaic throughout the valley, but the mountain staff at Canaan Valley Resort Ski Area have barely had time to notice. This time of year, staffers are dreaming of a white mountain and happy skiers as preparations for the upcoming ski season gain steam.

“Our crews put in a tremendous effort to make our ski area the pride of the valley,” said Steve Drumheller, general manager of Canaan Valley Resort. “We are looking forward to welcoming back our loyal season-pass holders as well as well as introducing the resort to new skiers.”

The ski area’s target opening date is Dec. 15, 2018.

Situated in West Virginia’s Potomac Highlands, Canaan Valley Resort Ski Area has swept  Liftopia’s “Best in Snow” awards in the Southeast United States the past two years. According to Liftopia, Canaan operates the top-ranked ski area in the Beginner Friendly, Most Challenging, Family Friendly, Best Snow Quality, Least Crowded and Best Value categories.

The ski area has made several major enhancements in recent years, including doubling its snowmaking capacity with the additions of snow guns and compressors. It has also added new ski and snowboard rental equipment as well as new ice skates and cross-country skis, and it has created a new “out-of-bounds” cross country ski trail on the back side of the ski hill.

Canaan Valley Resort Ski Area is recognized as a great place for skiers of all ages and abilities to learn to ski and snowboard and to improve their skills.

Its much-lauded adaptive ski program includes personalized instruction customized to individual needs and abilities. The school also offers group and private ski and snowboard lessons as well as telemark and cross country lessons. Children's programs include Canaan Cub Club for ages five to eight and Mountain Adventure ages nine to 12. The children's programs are offered at half and full days. Lunch is provided with the full-day lesson, and advanced reservations are available.
